Die Hauptdüse des SI Vergasers reguliert die Menge an Benzin, die für die Vormischung oder Vorschäumung zur Verfügung steht. Je größer der Hubraum und die Literleistung des Motors, desto größer ist in der Regel der Bedarf an Düsen. Die verfügbaren Größen reichen von 90 bis 160. Eine Hauptdüse mit einem Durchmesser von 1,02 mm (z. B. 102) liefert weniger Benzin als eine Düse mit 1,04 mm (z. B. 104), was zu einem fetteren Gemisch führt.Die Hauptdüse allein ist nicht verantwortlich für die Gemischbildung, sondern hält das Benzinniveau im Düsenstockbereich aufrecht. Durch den Unterdruck am Zerstäuber-Röhrchen wird Benzin angesogen, während Luft von oben hinzugefügt wird, um ein Benzin/Luftgemisch im Vergaserinneren zu bilden. Die Hauptluftkorrekturdüse spielt eine wichtige Rolle, da eine falsche Dimensionierung zu einem zu fetten oder zu mageren Gemisch führen kann.Bei Verwendung sehr großer Hauptdüsen können Probleme auftreten, wie ein ruckelnder Motor im Teillastbereich oder ein Absterben des Motors unter Vollast. Eine Anpassung der Luftdüse ist oft effektiver als die Verwendung von Schwimmerkammerspacern, da diese das Gemisch beeinträchtigen können. Modifikationen am Luftfilter oder der Einsatz von Ansaugtrichtern können ebenfalls die Gemischbildung beeinflussen und zu Betriebsproblemen führen.Es ist ratsam, die Hauptdüse bei einer Neutabstimmung des Motors so zu wählen, dass der Motor unter Vollgas "viertaktet" und dann schrittweise zu verkleinern, bis der Motor ohne Ruckeln Vollgas annimmt. Die Auswahl der Nebendüse, des Gasschiebers und des Mischrohrs kann dann zur Feinabstimmung erfolgen. In den meisten Fällen ist eine Hauptluftkorrekturdüse mit einer Größe von 160 ausreichend für die meisten Motoren.
